Athletics is a category of sports which includes many events which can be classified as running, throwing or jumping events. These events aim to be completed in the shortest amount of time for running, or be thrown or jumped to the farthest distance.
Although the first known human footraces were held in Egypt, the word 'athletics' is derived from the Latin word 'athos' (fight, struggle and war) and were a very popular contest in the Hellenic Greek Olympic Games. The first periodic modern athletic competitions were held in 1825, London.
