Basketball is a popular game worldwide in which the aim is to score via putting a ball through a hoop, 10 feet from the ground. It is officially played in teams of five, but in informal contexts, can be played with three people on each team as well.
Basketball was initially training for baseball players and athletes, with the aim of putting balls through wooden baskets. The invention of the sport is generally credited to James Naismith, who first played in 1891. Since the main objective is scoring in the baskets, Naismith named the game "basket ball".
